Last week, en route to the Berkshires, I had an afternoon chock-full of Balthazar and Fatty Crab reservations. Thanks to American Airlines’ painstaking delays, however, I only had time for one, quick meal in the city. I met up with the infamous Daniel Treiman (shoutout, homie!) at Five Points, one of my favorite brunch spots. When in NY, I always make an effort to eat at Five Points because the food is consistent and reasonable, the dining room is charming, and the hipster servers are super attentive.
A $40 cab ride from the lower-upper East side and a 10 block speed-walk later, we scarfed down black kale salad with lemon-anchovy dressing and parmesan ($12), a crispy fried chicken sandwich ($13), and the Gimme Samoa cake ($9).
The buttery and toasty grilled bun was quickly tossed aside to make room for this prime piece of perfectly cooked chicken. It was light and crispy and I’m still not sure how we shared it so tamely. We both looked up at each other, like fried chicken savages, in awe of how good it was. The pickles and brined onions provided a nice, tangy contrast, but the chicken shined on its own. No bun necessary.
The aptly named cake was awesome. The cake, albeit slightly dry on its own, was divine when eaten with the gelato and caramel. The thick, almost chewable caramel binded the melty, milky gelato to the coconut-covered pound cake. It was the perfect lunch dessert. My only complaint: MORE CARAMEL. And cake. And gelato. I want another one right now.
